Sarasota, Reached By Water
Sarasota has some of the best coastline in the United States, and the best way to see it is from the deck of a private yacht. Siesta Key has the quartz-crystal sand people fly in for; St. Armands Circle is a short dinghy ride from a quiet anchorage. Both are easier to reach by boat than by car.
From our St. Petersburg dock we head south through the Intracoastal Waterway toward Sarasota Bay, past Anna Maria Island, under the Cortez Bridge, and along Longboat Key's shoreline before reaching Sarasota's barrier islands. New Pass and Big Sarasota Pass both open onto the Gulf for swimming, anchoring and the run home at sunset.

Siesta Key
Consistently ranked America's #1 beach, Siesta Key is known for ultra-fine quartz-crystal sand that stays cool underfoot. Approach from the water through Big Sarasota Pass for a view most visitors never get, then anchor offshore and swim.
Longboat Key & New Pass
Longboat Key stretches over 10 miles between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Cruise its Intracoastal shoreline past estates and mangroves, then head through New Pass into the open Gulf for sunset and deep-water swimming.
Lido Key & Sarasota Bay
Lido Key sits between Longboat Key and Siesta Key, with good beaches and a view of the St. Armands Circle waterfront. Sarasota Bay itself is calm and protected, and dolphins and manatees turn up in it year round.

Your captain's Tip: The Sarasota Run
Sarasota Bay sits roughly 35 nautical miles south of our home port at Maximo Marina. It is doable as a day charter, but it eats most of a 4-hour window in transit. For Sarasota-specific itineraries we recommend a 5+ hour weekend package or an overnight that anchors in Sarasota Bay and returns the following morning. The water around Siesta Key is some of the clearest on the west coast (95+ percent pure quartz sand makes the shallows look turquoise from above), and the south end of Lido Key gives you a quiet anchorage with a quick dinghy ride to St. Armands Circle for dinner. New Pass and Big Pass both work as Gulf entries; we prefer Big Pass on a rising tide for the smoothest transit.
A Sample 5-Hour Sarasota Itinerary
- 10:30 a.m. Boarding at Maximo Marina, St. Petersburg. Safety briefing, light provisioning loaded.
- 11:00 a.m. Head south past Egmont Key and Anna Maria Island. Open Gulf cruise with a chance of dolphin escorts.
- 12:30 p.m. Anchor off Longboat Key for swim and lunch. Crystal water, soft sand bottom, no crowds.
- 2:00 p.m. Cruise through Big Pass into Sarasota Bay. Slow tour of Bird Key and St. Armands waterfront homes.
- 3:00 p.m. Optional anchor off Siesta Key Beach for one more swim, then turn back north.
- 3:30 p.m. Return run to Maximo Marina. Total: ~75 nautical miles. Fuel surcharge waived on weekend packages.
