Tampa Bay is known for its shallow, clear sandbars, strips of white sand that surface at low tide so you can stand around in knee-deep turquoise water. It is the classic Gulf Coast day out, and a private yacht is the easiest way to do it.
Our 52ft Marquis Flybridge anchors right at the sandbar, and you step off the swim platform into warm, shallow water. Bring a cooler, set up on the sand, and run your playlist through our Bluetooth stereo. Most sandbar trips spend 2-3 hours at the bar, with cruising, dolphin spotting, and a sunset return on either side of it.
Fort De Soto Sandbar is the most popular: a big shallow flat near the Skyway Bridge with calm water and a long view down the bay. Shell Key Sandbar is quieter, with good shelling on the island next to it. Egmont Key Sandbar puts Civil War-era fort ruins and clear snorkeling water in the same stop. Beer Can Island (Longboat Key) is the party sandbar, where boats raft up on weekends.
Rent a small boat and you are the one reading the chart in unfamiliar water. On a private yacht trip a USCG-licensed captain handles the anchoring, the tide timing, and the route. You show up with your food and drinks (BYOB).

Quieter than Fort De Soto. Lounge on the sandbar and go shelling on the undeveloped barrier island next to it. Dolphins come through often.

Walk out to the Civil War-era fort ruins, then snorkel the clear water around this island at the mouth of Tampa Bay.

Which Tampa Bay sandbar is the best?
Fort De Soto sandbar is the most popular: big, calm, and near the Skyway Bridge. Shell Key sandbar is quieter and better for shelling. Egmont Key pairs snorkeling with Civil War history. Your captain will recommend one based on the tides and the weather.
Does the tide affect sandbar trips?
Yes. Sandbars show most at low tide, when the shallow flats come out of the water. Our captain watches the tide charts and plans the route so you arrive when conditions are best.
Can you walk on the sandbar?
Absolutely. At low tide, the water at Fort De Soto and Shell Key sandbars is often knee-deep or shallower. You can wade, walk, lounge, and set up on the sand. The yacht anchors nearby and you access the sandbar from the swim platform.
Are sandbar trips safe for kids?
Yes. The shallow, calm water at a sandbar is good for children. We provide life jackets for all guests, and kids 6 and under have to wear them at all times. A lot of families book sandbar trips for exactly that reason.
What should I bring to the sandbar?
Bring towels, sunscreen, a cooler with food and drinks (BYOB, no glass), swimsuits, and water shoes. We have ice and cooler space on the yacht. A waterproof phone case is a good idea.
