What Is Gasparilla?

Every late January, Tampa fills up with pirates and draws more than 300,000 people to the waterfront. The Gasparilla Pirate Festival is one of the largest parades in the United States, and it has been a Tampa Bay tradition for over a century. The event commemorates the legend of Jose Gaspar, a mythical pirate who supposedly terrorized the Gulf Coast in the 1800s.

The centerpiece of the festival is the pirate invasion of downtown Tampa. A full-size pirate ship, the Jose Gasparilla, leads a flotilla of hundreds of decorated boats into Hillsborough Bay and up the Seddon Channel toward the Tampa Convention Center. Cannons fire, pirates wave their cutlasses, and the crowd goes wild along Bayshore Boulevard. After the invasion, a massive parade rolls down Bayshore with elaborate floats, marching bands, and bead-throwing pirates. The day ends with fireworks over the water.

For locals and visitors alike, Gasparilla is the highlight of the Tampa Bay winter calendar: part local history, part excuse to get everyone out on the water. The best place to watch it is from the deck of a private yacht, anchored right in the middle of the action.
