52ft Marquis yacht anchored at sandbar near Shell Key with guests in turquoise water

Secluded Island Paradise

Shell Key Preserve is a pristine, undeveloped barrier island just south of St. Pete Beach — and one of the most beautiful natural destinations on Florida's Gulf Coast. Protected as part of the Pinellas County Aquatic Preserve, this island has no roads, no buildings, and no crowds. It's the kind of place that feels like a private paradise, and aboard our 52ft Marquis Flybridge, that's exactly what it becomes.

Shell Key is famous for its world-class shelling, with conch shells, sand dollars, and sea glass scattered along miles of untouched shoreline. The surrounding shallow sandbars are perfect for wading, swimming, and simply soaking in the turquoise water. Dolphin encounters are common here — pods regularly cruise through the channels around the island. During nesting season, you may even spot sea turtles along the shore. Shell Key is approximately 20 minutes from our dock, and can easily be combined with Pass-a-Grille or Egmont Key for an unforgettable full-day island-hopping charter.

World-Class Shelling

Shell Key lives up to its name. Discover conch shells, sand dollars, sea glass, and countless other treasures along miles of untouched shoreline that few visitors ever reach.

Dolphin Encounters

Pods of bottlenose dolphins regularly cruise through the channels surrounding Shell Key. Watch them play in the wake or swim alongside the yacht on your approach to the island.

Pristine Sandbars

Shallow, crystal-clear sandbars surround Shell Key — perfect for wading, swimming, and lounging in knee-deep turquoise water. It's the definition of a Florida postcard moment.

Sea Turtle Habitat (seasonal)

During nesting season, Shell Key becomes a critical habitat for sea turtles. Witness one of nature's most incredible cycles on this protected barrier island preserve.

One of the Gulf's Last Undeveloped Barrier Islands

Shell Key is a preserve, not a fort — here's what to expect and how to time it.

A 1,800-acre preserve off Tierra Verde

The Shell Key Preserve spans roughly 1,800 acres just south of Pass-a-Grille and Tierra Verde, making it one of the largest undeveloped barrier islands left on Florida's Gulf coast. It's managed by Pinellas County, which means no condos, no concession stands, no bridge — just white sand, sea oats, and shallow grass flats. Coming from our St. Petersburg dock, it's a short, protected run down through the bay, so it's an easy half-day even with kids aboard.

Shelling and a low-tide sandbar

Shell Key earns its name. The Gulf-facing beach collects whelks, conchs, scallops, and sand dollars, and at low tide an enormous sandbar emerges off the island where you can wade out knee-deep in clear water. We time charters around the tide so you get the sandbar at its best — anchor up, set out the cooler, and let the group spread out. It's the quintessential Tampa Bay sandbar day, without the crowds of the more accessible spots.

A bird sanctuary — know before you go

Shell Key is one of the most important bird nesting and wintering sites on the Gulf coast. Sections of the north and south ends are roped off seasonally (typically spring through late summer) to protect nesting black skimmers, least terns, and oystercatchers — please respect the posted closures. Outside those zones you're free to swim, paddle, and shell. Dolphins regularly work the grass flats around the island, and the run down often passes them. Want history and ruins instead? Pair this with our nearby Egmont Key charter for a two-island day.
