The Sandbar Day, Done Properly
Shell Key Preserve is roughly 1,800 acres of undeveloped barrier island just south of Pass-a-Grille and Tierra Verde, managed by Pinellas County with no condos, no concession stands, and no bridge. What it does have is an enormous sandbar that emerges on a falling tide, pool-clear water that stays knee-deep for a long way out, and a Gulf beach that collects whelks, conchs, scallops, and sand dollars.
This is the easy island. The run from our dock is 20 minutes through protected water, the yacht anchors on the edge of the flat so you step off into the shallows, and the boat stays right there with air-conditioning, a bathroom, and a galley. Shelling at Low Tide
Shell Key earns its name. Your captain times the stop to a falling or low tide so the freshest shells are exposed on the bar and the Gulf beach. Bring a mesh bag; live shells stay on the beach.
Shallow-Water Anchoring
We anchor the Marquis on the deep edge of the sandbar, drop the swim ladder, and you wade in. Toddlers can stand, grandparents can float, and nobody has to swim to reach the beach.
Dolphins on the Run
Pods of bottlenose dolphins work the grass flats and channel edges around the island. The short cruise down through Boca Ciega Bay and the Pass-a-Grille channel is where the kids usually spot them first.
Built for Families
Air-conditioned salon for naps, a real bathroom, a galley for the cooler, shade on two decks, and a crew that keeps an eye on the swim ladder. Four hours is the right length for young kids.
A Shell Key Afternoon, Hour by Hour
Shell Key is close and calm, so four hours covers it comfortably. Your captain shifts the start time to match the tide for your date.
0:00: Board at Maximo Marina, head down Boca Ciega Bay
Load the cooler and the beach bags, get the kids settled on the bow, and idle out. The route runs south through the calm inside waters past Tierra Verde and the Pass-a-Grille channel, with the Gulf beaches on your right the whole way.
0:20: Anchor on the edge of the sandbar
The captain eases the Marquis onto the deep side of the flat and sets the anchor. Swim ladder down, floats out, music on. The water is clear enough to watch your feet, and shallow enough that the group spreads out across the bar without anyone needing to be a strong swimmer.
1:30: Shelling walk on the Gulf beach
Wade across to the island and walk the Gulf side, where the best whelks, scallops, and sand dollars collect on a falling tide. Seasonal bird-nesting closures at the north and south ends are roped off; everything in between is open to explore.
2:45: Lunch aboard, last swim
Back to the boat for food from the galley in the air-conditioned salon, then one more float on the bar. Anyone who has had enough sun heads up to the flybridge for the view.
3:30: Easy run home, dock at 4:00
Twenty minutes back up the bay. Book the late-afternoon slot and the return leg is golden hour with dolphins on the channel edges.

Tide Matters
The sandbar is at its widest on a low or falling tide, and mornings usually pair low water with the calmest conditions. Tell us your date and we will suggest the start time that puts you on the bar at its best.
Pack for the Beach
Water shoes, a mesh shell bag, floats, and a cooler. We provide the ice and the swim ladder. There is nothing to buy on the island, so anything you want to eat or drink comes with you.
A Bird Sanctuary
The Shell Key Preserve is one of the Gulf coast's most important nesting sites for black skimmers, least terns, and oystercatchers. Marked sections close seasonally, typically spring through late summer; please respect the posted lines.
